A Quiet Guide
to Singapore.

Small rules, local rhythms, and how to move without friction.

Before You Arrive

Singapore’s electronic arrival card must be submitted within three days of arrival — not earlier, or it may expire before you land. Save a screenshot. Hotels generally require the physical passport, not a photo or digital copy[citation:9].

Moving Around出行

The MRT covers almost everything a visitor needs. Tap in and out with the same card or contactless bank card — missing a tap can result in a full-route charge. On buses, press the stop button before your stop; the driver will not automatically pull over[citation:9].

Singapore is small enough that walking often beats transport for short hops. The city is safe at night, well-lit, and easy to navigate on foot.

Dining Rules

At hawker centres and casual eateries, clear your own tray when you finish — there are designated return points, and locals do this as a matter of course[citation:9]. Say “dine-in” or “takeaway” clearly when ordering; the default may not match what you expect. Iced water is often chargeable; tap water at hawker centres is usually free if you bring a bottle.

Public Etiquette

Singapore runs on small courtesies. Stand on the left on escalators. Queue without crowding. Keep your voice low on public transport — phone calls on speaker are frowned upon. Do not eat or drink on the MRT; the fine is real. Durians are banned from public transport entirely.

Timing Your Evening

Singapore darkens early — around 7pm year-round — and the city changes character almost immediately. Rooftop bars fill between 7 and 9. Dinner reservations are wise on weekends. After 10pm, the pace slows in most neighbourhoods except Clarke Quay and a handful of late-night spots.

If you prefer quiet, aim for an early evening: a 6:30 dinner, a walk by the water, and a slow drink somewhere with low lighting. The city is at its best before the crowds arrive.
